ECUADOR

More than 90% of Ecuadoreans are Catholic, making Semana Santa a major event in Quito. This week of worship embodies the last days of Jesus Christ, commemorating his suffering, his crucifixion and finally his resurrection. Easter procession during the Semana Santa brings thousands of penitents to the old centre of Quito. It is also called Jesus of Great Power procession or Jesus del Gran Poder.

The most prominent characters are the Cucuruchos, named after the purple cone-shaped hoods they wear.
