Jesus of Great Power
Ecuador
Do you believe in God? In the Universe? In Energy? In science? Reincarnation? Did you lose your belief?
Is the question "if" you believe? Or is the question "in what" do you choose to believe?

In Ecuador more than 90% of the population is Catholic, making Semana Santa a major event in Quito, Ecuador. This week of worship commemorates the last days of Jesus Christ, marking his suffering, crucifixion, and ultimately, his resurrection. Easter procession during Semana Santa also called Jesus of Great Power procession, brings thousands of penitents to the old centre of Quito.

During the procession people punish themselves as an act of penitence to atone for their sins, symbolically recreating the suffering and sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Penitents, known as cucuruchos, inflict physical pain on themselves through self-flagellation or by carrying heavy crosses and wearing thorn crowns. The purple robes and pointed hats worn by cucuruchos symbolize penitence and humility, respectively.
