Global influences in Namibia's traditional regions
What is the impact of globalization on traditional tribes in the world? With One World Connected I explore interconnectedness and the tension between tradition and change. I was amongst a select team of contemporary fine art photographers to collaborate on the Faces of Our Planet project and exhibition at the Smithsonian Air and Space museum, Washington D.C.; together with Albert Watson, Aline Smithson, Will Wilson and others. The task was to explore the human experience of living on Earth and the impact of globalization. I chose to travel to Namibia, a country not only known for its variety of traditions, still living their traditional way of life, but also as a country undergoing huge consequences of climate change. The visited traditions seem to have adapted and changed – as a result of globalization - in ways that remain true to their most cherished traditional values. The interviews I did showed that although young and old were very proud of their traditions, they easily included new items that made their life easier. The interviewees were positive about the future. They embraced the progress in communication as much as the increase of imported products. Generally, people hoped to be more connected to other people in the world, mainly to learn from each other. --- The exhibit is part of the new One World Connected Gallery which tells the story of how aviation and spaceflight transformed the world—accelerating and making more accessible connections across vast distances, in every direction, enabling people, things, ideas, and images to move and intermingle in ways unprecedented in human history. Artifacts such as communication and weather satellites, touch screen interactives, models of the Earth, and original art of various media comprise the gallery. The photos of Faces of Our Planet complement these artifacts and interactives with a human dimension that provides personal reflections on recent globalization.
