One World Connected

In search for global influences in Namibia's remote regions

I was amongst a select team of contemporary fine art photographers to collaborate on the Faces of Our Planet project and exhibition at the Smithsonian Air and Space museum, Washington D.C. together with Albert Watson, Aline Smithson, Will Wilson and others.

We explored the human experience of living on Earth and the impact of globalization.

Each of us visited different communities across the globe and brought back intimate portraits and interviews to express the many diverse, common concerns, experiences, and benefits of an interconnected planet.

I chose to visit the most remote areas of Namibia to research if, due to globalization, traditions are disappearing or becoming pale variants of one dominant culture, the Western one. Or are traditions dynamic entities that find different ways on how to deal with globalization? I found that the visited traditions seem to have adapted and changed¬—as a result of globalization—in ways that remain true to their most cherished values. Generally, the Namibian people hoped to be more connected to other people in the world, mainly to learn from each other.

The exhibit is part of the new One World Connected Gallery which tells the story of how aviation and spaceflight transformed the world—accelerating and making more accessible connections across vast distances, in every direction, enabling people, things, ideas, and images to move and intermingle in ways unprecedented in human history.

Artifacts such as communication and weather satellites, touch screen interactives, models of the Earth, and original art of various media comprise the gallery. The photos of Faces of Our Planet complement these artifacts and interactives with a human dimension that provides personal reflections on recent globalization.
